Sandcastle under siege

Dear ,

How to encourage your clients to include a will as part of organising their personal affairs

Your clients are obviously concerned about keeping their personal finances in order or they would not be talking to you.

But if this doesn’t include having an up to date will, there are some very good reasons you can give them for doing so:

Research has shown that the main reasons prompting people to make wills and give power of attorney are:

  • Births, marriages and deaths in the family.
  • Divorce
  • Illness, accident, or disability
  • Windfall gains
  • Overseas adventures (from holidays to emigration)
  • Children coming of age
  • Retirement, and
  • Moving house or job.

In other words, a significant life event tends to focus people’s attention.

At this time of year, when holidays are coming up, they won’t think twice about taking out holiday insurance before they go.

It’s not necessarily that they’re expecting things to go wrong – it’s just something most people do as a precaution.

But isn’t it a little illogical to insure yourself for the statistically small possibility of a holiday mishap, and then hesitate or postpone making a will?  After all, making a will is a precaution against a certainty which we can’t put a date on, and therefore arguably the most important insurance.

Why wait for a particular, possibly distressing event, when it can be done easily and confidentially in the comfort of home or in your office if preferred?

And if the worry is that there could be additional costs in amending a will as circumstances change, then the next article explains why that needn’t be the case.
